In the year 1934 around 2 Mio. people lived in the city of Vienna. 170.000 of those people were Jews. When the population of Vienna was counted again in 1954 after WWII the population of Vienna had dropped to 1,6 Mio. people. Merely about 2.000 of those people were Jews.

The history of Jews in Vienna goes far beyond the Shoah and reaches back way into the Middle Ages. Why did the Austrian rulers of the Babenberg family encourage Jews to settle in Vienna? And what did the eviction of the jewish community in the 17th century had to do with the miscarriages of empress Margarita Teresa?
